Wine Comparison: Gattinara DOCG vs Taurasi DOCG: Scores, Key Differences, Food Pairings and Which Italian Red Wine to Buy
Updated: Aug 25

Piedmont vs Campania. Alpine Nebbiolo against Southern Aglianico.
Gattinara DOCG and Taurasi DOCG are two of Italy’s great structured red wines, yet both remain less internationally famous than their quality deserves. Gattinara comes from northern Piedmont and is based overwhelmingly on Nebbiolo, traditionally called Spanna. Taurasi comes from the hills of Irpinia in Campania and is based on Aglianico.
Quick Answer
Choose Gattinara when you want Nebbiolo perfume, red fruit, high acidity, iron like minerality, elegance and firm precise tannins. Choose Taurasi when you want dark fruit, greater body, powerful tannins, smoke, tobacco, spice and long term cellar potential.
Gattinara DOCG
Gattinara lies much farther north than the Langhe, close to the Alps. Its Nebbiolo can show red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, rose, violet, licorice, iron, dried herbs, tobacco, leather and forest floor. The body can be restrained, but the acidity and tannin are serious, creating a wine built around tension and mineral persistence.
Taurasi DOCG
Taurasi is one of Southern Italy’s benchmark reds. The inland vineyards of Irpinia sit at meaningful elevations, allowing Aglianico to retain acidity despite the southern latitude. Black cherry, blackberry, dark plum, violet, licorice, black pepper, tobacco, leather, smoke, earth and balsamic herbs define the style. Young bottles can be formidable.
Key Differences
Gattinara is red fruited, floral and mineral; Taurasi is darker and smokier.
Both have high acidity and serious tannin.
Taurasi is generally fuller bodied and more muscular.
Gattinara emphasizes iron, flowers and finesse.
Taurasi emphasizes black fruit, smoke, tobacco and tannic power.
Both can age for decades.
Most Famous Gattinara Producers
Travaglini, Antoniolo, Nervi Conterno, Vallana, Petterino, Paride Iaretti, Anzivino, Il Chiosso, Delsignore and Cantina Sociale di Gattinara are important reference names. Nervi Conterno, Antoniolo and Travaglini are particularly useful starting points for serious Gattinara.
Most Famous Taurasi Producers
Mastroberardino, Feudi di San Gregorio, Salvatore Molettieri, Luigi Tecce, Antonio Caggiano, Contrade di Taurasi, Perillo, Quintodecimo, Terredora di Paolo and Donnachiara are among the most recognized producers. Mastroberardino is historically essential to the modern reputation of Taurasi.
