Beer Pairing: Baladin Nazionale

Baladin Nazionale is a beer built around a distinctly Italian idea: expressing the country through ingredients that come from its agricultural landscape.

Introduced in 2011 by Birrificio Agricolo Baladin, Nazionale was created as the first Italian craft beer made entirely with Italian ingredients. It combines approachable drinking with enough aromatic character to accompany a complete meal.

The Beer

Baladin began as a brewpub in Piozzo in 1996. Founded by brewer Teo Musso, it later developed into an agricultural brewery committed to controlling the production chain behind its beers.

A Beer Made from the Italian Landscape

Nazionale is produced with water drawn from the Maritime Alps, Italian barley malt, and hops grown in Baladin’s own fields in Piedmont. Spices and citrus add a subtle aromatic lift, while sugar and a house yeast cultivated in Piozzo complete the recipe.

The result is more than a statement about provenance. The ingredients give the beer a clear agricultural identity: grain, herbs, flowers, and citrus come together in a profile that feels rooted in the Italian countryside.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, Baladin Nazionale shows an intense yellow color with a delicate haze and a fine white head.

The aroma is fresh and measured, with notes of ripe fruit, herbs, grain, chamomile, and citrus. On the palate, the malt is gentle and rounded, while the hops provide controlled bitterness rather than an aggressive bite.

The finish is clean, balanced, and lightly aromatic, making the beer easy to return to throughout a meal.

Why Baladin Nazionale Works with Food

The citrus character refreshes the palate, while the restrained bitterness balances fat, frying, and melted cheese. Its soft malt profile creates a natural bridge to pizza crust, bread, potatoes, browned butter, and toasted flavors.

This balance makes Nazionale especially useful at the table: it can contrast rich food without overwhelming delicate ingredients.

Best Italian Food Pairings

The toasted crust and melted provola connect with the beer’s malt, while its citrus and hops lighten the cheese and sharpen the black pepper.

Gentle bitterness cuts through the fried exterior and molten mozzarella. The malt complements both the rice and the savory tomato center.

Chamomile and citrus lift the octopus, the malt supports the saffron potato, and the controlled bitterness balances the intensity of the olives.

Citrus refreshes the palate after salt cod and brown butter. Malt complements potato and toasted hazelnuts, while the herbal notes connect naturally with sage.

This is also a regional pairing. Bitterness and citrus contrast the frying, while the malt accompanies the dish’s savory and lightly sweet elements.

The malt mirrors the brioche and browned veal, while citrus and hops keep the fried egg’s richness under control.

Price and Availability

Current US retail listings place one 11–11.2 oz bottle of Baladin Nazionale at approximately $4.99–$6.00. Price and availability may vary by retailer and state.

Final Verdict

Baladin Nazionale is an excellent introduction to contemporary Italian craft beer. It remains accessible enough for pizza and fried food but has the aromatic complexity required for seafood, filled pasta, cheese, and richer dishes.

Its most convincing pairings are those that combine salt, fat, toasted flavors, and aromatic herbs. For a complete Italian meal, it is a genuinely versatile alternative to wine.
