Around Italy:Bologna


The main purpose of our trip besides seeing all the beautiful, historical sides was to find the best original bolognese sauce or we would say tagliatelle al ragù alla bolognese, thick strips of fresh egg pasta with a meat sauce. Another classic local dish is tortellini meat-stuffed pasta dumplings typically served in broth. And if you here in Bologna you must try it! But be careful where you eat! Do research first if you want to try the real stuff.

I have to admit it wasn’t so easy to find it as we thought at first. We stopped at a few trattorias (restaurants), we asked locals for recommendations, we googled reviews... We made our decision to stop at one local trattoria. It was a very busy place, we had to wait for our table for a little bit. While waiting to be sited we observed food that was coming out from the kitchen to tables. What we saw was a red flag for us. Cheap bread, cheap cut of frozen French fries, cheap olive oil and more that make us leave this trattoria and keep looking for another one. We were getting hungry.

Bologna is a working-class city with a laidback Italian lifestyle. So it’s very hard to find an open restaurant between 12 pm and 4 pm. Another fact to remember while traveling in Italy. While searching for a place to eat we stopped at Piazza Maggiore, the heart of Bologna and the center of action the beautiful colossal piazza is a public space facing centuries-old medieval buildings on all sides including the main cathedral, Basilica di San Petronio, and City Hall.

Bologna has three nicknames which reflect what it is best known for La Dotta (The Learned). Bologna University, founded in 1088, is the oldest university in the western world and students came from all over the world to study there.



La Grassa (The Fat)

The Emilia-Romagna region is where many of Italy’s top products come from—balsamic vinegar, parmesan cheese, Parma ham, and mortadella.

La Rossa (The Red)

Originally “The Red” nickname referred to the

terracotta tiled roofs of the city, which are best seen from the top of Asinelli Tower. Climbing the Asinelli Tower is an ideal Bologna experience. You can see Bologna in every direction.


Just a few steps from the Piazza Maggiore is the Quadrilatero, the oldest market in the city. In the narrow cobblestone streets and flutter with food and wine scene will have you stalking the trattorias for the perfect table to take it all in. Back to our bolognese sauce, I think we finally found what we were looking for. While walking through narrow streets in the city we found place La Frasca Al Vicolo.

The varied menu offers both traditional bologna dishes and dishes of the most creativ and tasty day; beers and quality wines; attentive, friendly and fast staff. Very recommended!
